I love a mix of picture frames up stairs & on large wall spaces. Here are some nice arrangements I like.

Having frames and mount board all one colour is key to them looking smart. Also, having a large mount/border makes the image more striking.
The arrangement here is one step past what I'd do, but i like the 3 in the verticall line
I like - one line to be in relation to the frame next to it. e.g. far left frame - the top of the one to the right - are both aligned. Then the bottom of the two on the left are aligned.
You need to have all the frames to start to plan that though.
http://www.4x90.com/ is a great site for buying frames in bulk. Nielson frames are really nice quality, but expensive - if you're buying 40 to go all the way up the stairs.
Black ones are easier to get away with cheap ones, some silver ones I bought were too shiny.
